Pied is regarded as a breed standard pattern for French Bulldogs and has existed in the breed from its inception. Pied aficionados enjoy the distinctive patterns presented to every puppy. For many breeders, this will provide variation to their litter, making every puppy distinct and adding still another level of dimension to a breed with a lot of personality. We will discuss the several pied varieties, housekeeping advice, and locations for a pied French Bulldog.

Pied is really a “cow-like” color scheme. A recessive gene, “s,” produces a lack of melanin in some parts of the dog. Under color in French Bulldogs will always be white, and the patch colors will vary. Breed standards would call for brindle pied, cream pied, and fawn pied, for instance. Out of breed standards would be bla singleue pied, lilac pied, cocoa pied, rojo pied, isabella pied, and pied merle.

Someone referring to Irish Pied is referring to one of two definitions. I will enumerate them both below and let you choose the usage of this phrase.

One is a visually pied dog with a single copy of pied in its DNA. So a pied carrier with a pied appearance.

The other is a dog with two copies of pied in their DNA, although most of the dog is covered in color instead of white. This is personal, but a minimum of 50% of the dog has to be pied to be Irish under this criterion.

The cream pied is honey pied; DNA would read ee s. Any white French Bulldog with cream patches would fit as a honeypie. But with the intensity dilution or other recessive genes, you can make this difference invisible, and occasionally the dog may seem white.

The top of the dog is highly colored; the dog’s belly is white. I find this phrase used alternately with Irish pied.

At this point the dog’s head is mostly white. Making a really white French Bulldog requires one of few techniques. Extreme pieds with what is known as the “Whitehead” gene have occasionally been reported. Deaf dogs have a gene linked to this one. Though it does happen, most extreme pied French Bulldogs are not deaf. A full hood would be a hat with both ears and eyes covered with color. If either of their eyes or ears show white, a half-hood or partial hood would be used.

I would especially advise your French Bulldog to have a low-grain, meat-heavy diet, filtered water, vitamins like Gladiator Gold, and clean stainless steel bowls if their half-hood of color exposes one or both eyes. Though the tear stains can be more obvious on a white-faced French Bulldog, I advise this for any French Bulldog.

I do think some hues have more than others. In my experience, mice like this often have high shedders. Having said that, I don’t think pieds really shed more; the white fur stands more clearly against many kinds of furniture and apparel.

As discussed above, pied is a breed standard color; many new color breeders will proudly display “no pied” or “no brindle,” since it is not a fad pattern. It has been around for a long time, hence it lacks the high price tag some of the new hues could have.

For breeders like us who do pieds since many families love pied French Bulldogs and are having trouble getting this pattern, color breeders avoiding pied actually does have advantages.

We breeders enjoy having pieds in our litters. They are more easily homed, and the extra variety creates a lovely litter. Since the pied markings help set each puppy apart from one another, I have also been enjoying not needing any kind of identification for each dog.
